Magnolia Pictures has nabbed the North American rights to Skate Kitchen, director Crystal Moselle’s fiction debut about a girl skateboarder in New York.
The film is Moselle’s follow-up to the 2015 Sundance U.S. documentary Grand Jury prize-winning pic The Wolfpack, which Magnolia also released. Magnolia is targeting a summer 2018 release for Skate Kitchen.
“Crystal Moselle has proven in impressive style that The Wolfpack was no fluke,” said Magnolia president Eamonn Bowles in a statement. Skate Kitchen follows a suburban teenager, played by Rachelle Vinberg, whose life changes dramatically when she befriends a group of female skateboarders in New York.
The film also stars Jaden Smith, and world-premiered at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival. The ensemble cast includes Dede Lovelace, Nina Moran, Ajani Russell and Kabrina Adams.
Skate Kitchen was written by Moselle, Aslihan Unaldi and Jen Silverman. The film is produced by A Bow and Arrow Entertainment and RT Features, in association with Pulse Films and Kotva Films.
The film’s producer credits are shared by Lizzie Nastro, Izabella Tzenkova, Julia Nottingham, Moselle, Matthew Perniciaro, Michael Sherman, and Rodrigo Teixeira. Executive producers are Lourenco Sant’Anna and Sophie Mas, and Alliah Sophia Mourad co-produces.
The deal was negotiated by Magnolia co-executive vp Dori Begley and Magnolia senior vp acquisitions John Von Thaden, with the UTA Independent Film Group on behalf of the filmmakers. 30WEST arranged the partnership between Magnolia and the film’s financier.
