Thompson repeats as player of the week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Mercer forward Amanda Thompson has been named the Southern Conference player of the week for games played Dec. 24-29. The award is selected by the league office.

The senior scored her third consecutive double-double, finishing with 20 points and 12 rebounds in the Bears’ lone contest of the week, a 61-47 win over UNC Asheville. The Hayesville, North Carolina, native finished 8-of-13 from the field. In the win, Thompson passed Kate Bosma in career rebounds (744), moving into eighth all-time in program history.

The award is the second consecutive and third in four weeks for the preseason all-conference selection. She leads the conference in rebounding (8.8 per game) and is second in steals (2.4 per game). Additionally, she is in the top 10 in scoring, field goal percentage, offensive rebounds, defensive rebounds, and minutes played.

Thompson and Bears play at Jacksonville on Jan. 2 and host Columbia on January 6 before beginning conference play against Samford on Jan. 12.
