Description

Shaping the Road Ahead: Harnessing the Power of Automated Vehicles for Toronto

Why is the City of Toronto hosting this workshop?

As you may be aware, automated vehicles have the potential to change our transportation system, and this technology is developing and being implemented quickly around the world. The City of Toronto has been researching and considering how to prepare for the emergence of automated vehicles since 2014. Consider this…

  • Vehicles with some self-driving automation are already on Toronto streets
  • Fully-autonomous (driverless) vehicles are expected to be commercially available by 2020
  • Automated vehicles could make longer commute times more attractive and reduce collisions
  • Automated vehicles can reduce the overall cost of travel, and make it accessible for people without a driver's license

What does this mean for the future mobility of youth, seniors, people with disabilities, and people with various levels of income?

How might this affect traffic congestion, use of parking space, public transit, land use, and employment?

What challenges and opportunities created by automated vehicles should the City be proactively planning to address?

In response to these uncertainties, City Council has requested that staff develop specific recommendations and a detailed and comprehensive Automated Vehicle Tactical Plan. This Tactical Plan will determine how automated vehicles can align with the City of Toronto's established priorities and official policies. We would like to invite you and your organization to help shape what these recommendations and actions could be.
