Greetings!
Did you know that Noah Webster, the Father of the American Dictionary, is also the Father of U.S. Copyright? His first book was a speller, but when he went to Philadelphia seeking federal copyright protection, he was told that under the Articles of Confederation the federal government had no ability to pass such a law. He would have to seek protection from the several states. So he did, selling his books in those states that granted copyright protections. By the time the U.S. Constitution was ratified, 12 of the 13 states had enacted copyright laws. Webster made sure the Patent and Copyright Clause was inserted in the new Constitution and worked with Congress to enact the first federal copyright law a year later. I'll have more on Noah reining in American culture in future posts.
Several speaking engagements are lined up in the coming months. The next public one is March 1 and is sponsored by the Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce. Information is below. Also below is a blog on the 5 ingredients to a successful networking pitch.
