A €14M (£12.4M) Dublin metro engineering design contract has been awarded to a consortium of consultancy Jacobs Engineering and Spanish firm Idom.
The Irish National Transport Authority (NTA) and Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) jointly awarded the contract for a team to develop the engineering design of the £2.1bn New Metro North project, they announced on Friday.
The consortium will get planning approval for the light rail project and bring the scheme forward to construction, as well as provide supervisory services during the construction stage.
The 17km light rail system will stretch from the northern suburbs to the south of the city centre and will connect the Irish capital to Dublin Airport in 19 minutes when it opens in 2027.
The new line will have 14 stops, six of which will be underground, and work is expected to start in 2021.
Plans for a new north metro system were first mooted in 2001, but the project was cancelled in 2011. A revised proposal was released in 2015 and the scheme was included in the government’s 2016-2021 capital investment plan.
