McQuillin, Bowen Allow Two Total Baserunners in Sunday Sweep

TUCSON, Ariz. -- Taylor McQuillin and Hanah Bowen allowed one baserunner apiece in a pair of one-hit shutouts that closed out the Hillenbrand Invitational. UA defeated Colorado State 3-0 and Bryant 14-0 (5 innings) to sweep the Hillenbrand Invitational (4-0) and improve to 8-1 on the season.

UA is in action this weekend in the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic in Palm Springs, California. UA opens the event on Thursday vs. North Carolina and Missouri.

Game 1 - Arizona 3, Colorado State 0

Taylor McQuillin had her perfect-game bid broken up with a one-out bloop single in the sixth inning, the only baserunner she would surrender on the day, but picked up her second shutout of 2018 with her 12-strikeout, one-hit masterpiece in Arizona's 3-0 victory over Colorado State.

McQuillin dueled with Colorado State's Bridgette Hutton, who worked in and out of trouble all night, but limited the potent Arizona offense to three runs on eight hits. McQuillin improved to 4-1 on the season while handing Colorado State (7-1) and Hutton (4-1) their first loss.

The two pitchers traded zeros on the scoreboard until Tamara Statman hit a two-run pinch-hit double in the fourth. Aleah Craighton added an RBI single in the sixth to insure the lead, which was plenty for McQuillin.

Game 2 - Arizona 14, Bryant 0

Hanah Bowen threw a one-hit shutout in her first career start and her offense supported her with season highs in runs (14), hits (14) and home runs (4) and the Cats defeated Bryant 14-0 in five innings in the Hillenbrand Invitational finale.

Bowen, like McQuillin earlier in the day, allowed just one hit in her first appearance in Hillenbrand Stadium. The freshman, who struck out eight Bulldogs, retired the final 14 batters she faced.

Bowen's gem was supported by Arizona's best offensive game of the season. Ashleigh Hughes, Jessie Harper, Hillary Edior and Joelle Krist all homered for Arizona. Harper added a double in her three-hit day, good for seven total bases in the game. Hughes went 3-for-3 with three RBI in the game.

Ivy Davis went 2-for-3 with a two-run double in her first career start at third base.
