The Renaissance Hotel at SeaWorld will expand by 16 percent by early next year in an effort to capture a larger share of the high number of meetings held in Orlando.

The hotel, which sits just across Sea Harbor Drive from the marine theme park, will add 30,000-square-feet to its meeting areas. The new space, which will move the hotel’s overall square footage from 185,000 to 215,000, is expected to welcome its first groups in January.

In a release announcing the move, General Manager Bob Walsh said: “As Orlando continues to grow in popularity for groups, and meetings continue to evolve, we are excited to be able to offer greater flexibility while accommodating larger groups more than ever before.”

The additional space comes as the city sees an expansion of hotel properties.

Universal Orlando Resorts recently opened its high-tech Aventura hotel and expects to open two more properties by the end of 2020.

At least 35 hotel expansion projects will begin this year or next, with the work expected to add nearly 7,000 rooms in Central Florida, according to data provided by Visit Orlando.

That would add to the about 125,000 hotel rooms in Central Florida.
