RSP Film Room No. 120: RB Sony Michel (Georgia), Extended Look

Matt Waldman’s Rookie Scouting Portfolio examines 2018 NFL Draft prospect Sony Michel’s performance against Notre Dame.

Coming off a monster freshman campaign, Nick Chubb’s performance led Leonard Fournette to say the University of Georgia runner outperformed him in 2014. With a ton of media buzz surrounding Chubb heading into 2015,  former Georgia head coach Mark Richt told the media that Nick Chubb was a legitimate Heisman candidate.

In the same breath, he also said that Sony Michel was the team’s best offensive player.

When Chubb got hurt early that year, Michel — a five-star prospect more heralded than Chubb when they arrived in Athens the year before — produced to those lofty expectations.

I’ve spent the past 2-3 years lauding Chubb at this site and on social media because I think he has the tools to become a special NFL back.  That’s no slight to Michel whose name and game also belong at the top of this year’s list of running back prospects.

While I like Chubb’s upside the most, Michel has the makings of a consummate NFL starter  —  like the player I compare him to in this extended look versus Notre Dame.
