That's all Folks!
Welcome to the final SES newsletter for 2017. It's been an active year for us as we debuted the new Tier 2 High Performance Computing (HPC) Centres in May at the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council launch event. We were also pleased to co-host the launch of Thomas at UCL, featuring some of the exciting new and existing research on SES university HPC. Powering Up Research: Enabling the Materials and Molecular Modelling Hub was designed to raise awareness amongst the entire UK Materials and Molecular Modelling community of the accessibility and capabilities of this new UK-wide High Performance Computing Hub. We welcomed leaders in the field, including Dr Susan Morrell (EPSRC), Prof. Mark Miodownik (UCL) and Massimo Noro (Science Leader High Performance Computing at Unilever). Full talks and presentations are available online, as well as the panel Q&A podcast. See below for Part 2 of the Powering Up Research series.
We also released a wide range of research case studies this year, touching on asthma and biomarkers, nanocatalysts for industrial processes, materials and crystallography and forensic science (amongst other subjects). Stay tuned in January for a new case study with Dr. Delmiro Fernandez-Reyes (UCL) to discover how 'brainy' computers are changing our lives and helping to fight malaria.
What's next?
We're very pleased to announce that SES will be the lead partner for the first UK Gender Summit, to be hosted at King's College London in 2018. The Gender Summit is a not-for-profit initiative aiming to make gender equality in research and innovation the norm and to embed gender as a primary dimension of quality. The Gender Summit started in Europe in 2011 and has helped to influence how gender is addressed in Horizon 2020, the biggest EU Research and Innovation programme ever with nearly €80 billion of funding available over 7 years. Previous summits have already brought together over 5000 participants and over 600 contributors from over 50 countries, representing expertise and leadership in policy, gender scholarship, science decision making and industry. Updates and registrations will commence in 2018.
We'd like to thank everyone who has been involved with SES during 2017 and we're looking forward to an exciting 2018. We'll be back with further plans and activities after the new year, and don't forget to forward this on to your colleagues.
