Where to see Japan's famous cherry blossom

From as early as the eighth century, imperial courtiers paused to appreciate the delicate pink cherry blossom trees of Japan - known as sakura - before indulging in picnics and poetry sessions beneath the blooms. In modern Japan, this ceremony is still a big deal and people travel far and wide to see it. When the blossom arrives, as confirmed by teams of meticulous officials, it is time to indulge in one of the nation's all-time favourite pastimes - hanami, which translates literally as "looking at flowers", and refers to the flower appreciation picnics conducted under the trees. These happen all across Japan for the duration of the blossom season. Here are some of the best places to partake.

Lake Kawaguchi

Is there anywhere more spectacular to take in the glory of cherry blossom trees than against a backdrop of snow-capped Mt. Fuji? The best spot is at Lake Kawaguchi, located within the iconic Fuji Five Lakes area. To witness the cherry blossom from a whole new perspective take a cruise and gaze in awe at the stunning views across the southern side of the lake.

Nara Park

The temples and castles that can be viewed from Nara Park are flanked by cherry blossom trees at this special time of year. The park, which is one of the oldest in Japan, is famous for its deer and provides a great place to wander among the cherry blossom. For a perfect lunch break, take a picnic and watch the world go by whilst sitting beneath the trees.

Tokyo

The quiet neighbourhood of Nakameguro draws people from across the city (making it not so quiet in cherry blossom tree season), visiting for its laid-back atmosphere, quirky cafes and fashion boutiques that line a picturesque canal, fringed by cherry blossom. You'll likely have seen this on Instagram.

Osaka

Cherry blossom frames the picture-perfect view of 16th-century Osaka Castle, located in Japan's second largest city. Surrounded by a moat and a park with plum, peach and cherry blossom trees, this ancient castle is not to be missed.

Kyoto

Kyoto features a wealth of UNESCO Heritage Sites which offer a stunning backdrop for the cherry blossom trees. Guests on an RT Holidays tour can take an afternoon sightseeing excursion to visit idyllic cherry blossom viewing points such as Nijo Castle and the Kinkakuji Temple.
