Eishic. 1795–1800

Chester Beatty

Chester Beatty
Dublin, Ireland

This ukiyo-e woodblock print is titled Beautiful women at a yashiki (Yashiki ni tetsu bijin). Pictures of beautiful women (bijin-ga), usually the most popular and trendsetting courtesans, were one of the prevalent image genres. This polychrome work by the Edo print designer, book illustrator and painter Chobunsai Eishi, possibly part of a triptych, depicts a group of women in a large manor house in the countryside.
