Beloved music teacher dies from flu complications
A beloved music teacher has died of flu complications, prompting classes to be canceled on Friday. Phyllis Gotlib, 68, was a music teacher at Clarke, Hadley and Stanley elementary schools in Swampscott.“Phyllis was a wonderful person loved by everyone. She brought music into the lives of so many children in Swampscott and Marblehead," her family said in statement. "We are shocked and saddened and can’t express how much we will miss her."Swampscott’s elementary schools will be closed Friday, Jan. 19, School Superintendent Pamela Angelakis said Thursday.“This will make it possible for school staff and families to attend services for Ms. Gotlib, our friend, colleague, and music teacher,” she said. Agelakis said cleaning crews were at the Clarke and Hadley schools before students arrived for classes Thursday. The crews "thoroughly cleaned all doorknobs, railings, her classrooms and common areas, including teacher prep spaces and hallways." The Department of Public Health estimates between 250 and 1,100 Massachusetts residents die annually from complications of influenza.
