Simplicity rules. Just ask Cashmere Cat and Major Lazer‘s Diplo. The first-time collaborators were scratching their heads for months trying to find the perfect drop for the Tory Lanez-assisted “Miss You,” but it was only when they stopped overthinking the process that they saw the light.
Today, “Miss You” was released on Mad Love via Interscope, and its Zane Lowe’s pick for World Record. Cashy, Diplo and Lanez hopped on a call with Lowe to talk about the creative process on his Beats 1 radio show.
“Cashmere [Cat] had an idea for a song and it kind of fit the Major Lazer mold a little bit so I just helped him steer it,” Diplo says. “We finished it together backstage one night at Red Rocks in Denver actually…It was after his set, before my set… It was funny because we actually worked on the drop for a year and everything sucked. And then we made the most easiest drop ever.”
“Miss You” brings Cashmere and Diplo together officially for the first time, though the Norwegian Cat has been a fan of Diplo and Major Lazer for years. He’s also collaborated with Lanez since the early days of his career, so it was a no-brainer to get the R&B crooner involved. The song was actually originally planned for Lanez’ upcoming album, and that’s how producer Benny Blanco got involved. Fans may be even more surprised to hear that, courtesy of Blanco, Ed Sheeran was tapped to help write the lyrics.
In the end, “Miss You” is quite sparse and strangely tropical. You can hear all about “Miss You” by listening to the full interview with Lowe via Apple Music. In it, Diplo confirms there’s music to come from Silk City, his collaboration with Mark Ronson scheduled to perform at Governor’s Ball this summer. You’ll also hear all about how Cashmere Cat got himself lost in some studio in Nashville.
Good luck getting out of there, Cashy. Enjoy “Miss You” below.
