The girls have managed to achieve this feat without any significant aid from the government, reported ANI. A small team of only 11 girls had started the campaign in September 2015. From 11, the team slowly grew to 110. Thanks to their efforts, 45 villages in Saharanpur have managed to become open defecation free, reported ANI.

The girl gang has been praised for their endeavour by the administration.

Many parts of rural and urban India continue to struggle with open defecation and the perils of not having enough toilets, especially for women.

Fewer toilets for women increases their vulnerability to infection and disease, to say nothing of the higher risk of sexual assault.

Despite government programmes such as the ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’ promoting the cause of freeing India of open defecation, the goal is yet to be fulfilled.
