Apply for fully-funded 4-year scholarships covering your master’s and PhD (1+3)
Manchester is one of Europe’s leading centres of research on the challenges of international development.
If you’re are a UK or EU citizen, interested in postgraduate research training, the North West Social Science Doctoral Training Partnership (NWSSDTP) can provide scholarships for a one year master’s course, then a three year PhD, know as the 1+3 programme.
Scholarships are through the Development and Humanitarianism in an Unequal World pathway and are based at the Global Development Institute.
Students study for a one year master’s course and then move straight onto a 3 year PhD.
Scholarships:
The NWSSDTP’s fully-funded ESRC studentships cover tuition fees for the duration of the studentship (including master’s and PhD training years for 1+3 studentships). UK students and EU citizens who have been residents of the UK for the past 3 years are also eligible for an annual maintenance stipend ((£14,553 in 2018, exact rate for 2020 subject to confirmation from UKRI).
Students are also able to apply for funding for Research Training Support Grants, overseas fieldwork and overseas Institutional visits or internships.

The application process:
1. Discuss your research interests with potential PhD supervisors
Potential applicants are encouraged to start discussing their research interests with potential supervisors as soon as possible, and by mid-December 2019 at the latest.
2. Apply for master’s and PhD study
As part of the 1+3 scholarship scheme students need to apply for both master’s and PhD study.
Applications for master’s and PhD study should be submitted by the end of January.
3. Apply for 1+3 scholarship
The application deadline for 1+3 awards is 3rd February 2020.
