DAF System Limits Downtime for Auto Parts Manufacturer

Nov. 1, 2018
Unipres USA replaced its oil-water separator with a dissolved air flotation system from JWC Environmental to meet new municipal wastewater discharge requirements.

Unipres USA is a premium automotive parts manufacturer focused primarily on stamping, machining and assembly of metal parts for automotive body structures. The company has been in Portland, Tenn., since 1987 and employs a workforce of more than 1,000.

The plant had been relying on a rudimentary oil-water separator to remove the oils present in the waste stream before discharging to the city’s treatment system. The plant’s system was frequently overwhelmed by the high oils concentrations, and in 2016, the city of Portland prohibited the Unipres plant from discharging its wastewater into the municipal wastewater system.

The Unipres team looked at several technical approaches to solving the challenge and settled on an FRC Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) system from JWC Environmental.

Unipres needed a system that could process 17 GPM of wastewater and bring the FOG down from 5,100 mg/L to less than 100 mg/L. It also needed to be designed to minimize disruption to plant operations as well as work within the project budgets.

The Unipres team looked at several technical approaches to solving the challenge and settled on an FRC Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) system from JWC Environmental due to its ability to limit plant disruption, maintain budget and meet the discharge requirements.

The brisk pace of the plant’s operation and a minimal tolerance for disruptions prompted a focus on ease of delivery, installation and startup. A skid-mounted design for the entire system with a layout that allowed its placement as close as possible to the existing wastewater infrastructure insured the fastest possible installation. Additionally, the design allowed for repurposing of the oil-water separator as an EQ tank, which also helped maintain the project budget. IWW
