Drawing - Ink On Paper
Description
ink and marker on acid free paper, 5x8 inch drawing, matted and framed to approx 9x11 total size. The process of crystallization is not completely understood. What happens right at the interface of liquid and highly ordered solid? Is there a thin region of partial order? partial liquidity? With organic molecules and polymers, the objects that crystallize are molecules and not atoms or ions. Molecules are not hard spheres, they can change their shape. Polymers REALLY change their shape in a crystal, starting off like spaghetti and folding up like origami to crystallize.
In Interphases and grains, I tried to capture some of these ideas and portray them in a light and fanciful manner. The color scheme and soft mysterious shapes intertwined with the detailed line drawings are also reminiscent of the types of imagery encountered when working with electron crystallography and transmission electron microscopy (not scanning electron microscopy - those are toys)
Created by drawing on one side of the paper and letting the ink bleed through (controlled using pressure and by holding marker in one place). The drawing was then continued and finished on the reverse side of the paper.
