The Schultz Family Foundation announced this week it would donate $7.5 million to Syracuse University to expand a program for veterans transitioning from the military to civilian work.
Foundation has partnered with SU’s Institute for Veterans and Military Families in the past on veterans' initiatives. In 2015, SU with support from the Schultz Family Foundation launched the Onward to Opportunity program, which helps prepare veterans for careers and employment outside the military.
The program, O2O, has helped nearly 20,000 service members, veterans and families with skills training and certification, SU said in a news release. It has helped 11,000 veterans and spouses find jobs, SU said.
The infusion of cash this year will go toward expanding that program to reach more veterans and service members.
The university has invested significantly in veterans initiatives over the last several years. It received a $20 million gift last year to help fund a new veterans center just off of Marshall Street in Syracuse. Construction on the center is currently underway.
