The Jeep Grand Cherokee is a powerful and capable vehicle that can take on any road condition throughout Chicago, Skokie, Park Ridge, and Forest Park. Sometimes, you may see a light appear on your vehicle’s dashboard and wonder what it means, or what you should do about it.

Guide to Automotive Maintenance

That’s why our team at Marino Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram wrote this Jeep Grand Cherokee dashboard symbols guide. We’re here to explain the difference between indicator and warning lights,  some examples to watch out for, and if your vehicle requires maintenance. Read all about them below, and don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.

Grand Cherokee Indicator Lights

Indicator lights are simply to show when certain systems in the vehicle are active, and are normally no cause for concern. However, if a light comes on when a feature isn’t in use, or the light doesn’t turn off when it should, then you’ll need a certified Jeep technician to look at your vehicle as soon as possible.

Some indicator lights in the Grand Cherokee are…

  • Cruise Control SET Indicator Light: It looks like a speedometer with an arrow pointed to it. This light will turn on when the vehicle is set to the desired speed while using cruise control.
  • Sport Mode Indicator Light: Will appear on the dash as a checkered flag when Sport mode is active.
  • 4WD Low Indicator Light (if equipped): When you see 4WD LOW, then you know that 4-wheel drive LOW mode is active.
  • Forward Collision Warning Off Indicator Light (if equipped): What looks like two cars colliding into each other with the word OFF underneath is this light telling you that Forward Collision Warning is off.
  • Hill Descent Control (HDC) Indicator Light (if equipped): When the image of a car going down a hill with an odometer above it appears, then you know that HDC is on.
    • The light will be solid when HDC is armed, which is when the vehicle’s transfer case is in the 4WD LOW position and the speed is less than 30 MPH.
    • If you’re attempting to use the HDC feature when the above conditions haven’t been met, the light will flash on and off.

Grand Cherokee Warning Lights

Jeep Grand Cherokee Dashboard Lights

When a warning light appears on the Jeep Grand Cherokee’s dash, it could mean that one of your vehicle’s systems is no longer functioning correctly. Regardless, you’ll need to get your vehicle checked out as soon as you can to prevent further damage to your automobile.

The following are some warning lights to keep an eye out for…

  • Brake Warning Light: When you see BRAKE in all capital letters, it could mean one of three things: your parking brake is down, the brake fluid is low, or there’s a problem with the Anti-Lock Brake System.
  • Jeep Grand Cherokee Dashboard LightsElectric Power Steering Fault Warning Light: When the image of a steering wheel with an exclamation point appears, then there’s a fault with the Electric Power Steering System.
  • Oil Pressure Warning Light: A picture of an oil can followed by a chiming sound indicates that there’s low engine oil pressure. If the light comes on when driving, pull over safely and turn the engine off, and don’t operate the Grand Cherokee until the issue has been fixed.
  • Jeep Grand Cherokee Dashboard LightsSeat Belt Reminder Warning Light: When you see a person wearing a seat belt appear on the dash followed by a chime, it means the driver or passenger seat belt is unbuckled. Once all occupants are buckled in, the light should turn off.
  • Low Fuel Warning Light: This light looks like a gas pump and will come on when there’s 2.4 gallons of gas left in your vehicle. The light will remain on until you add fuel to the car.

Auto Start/Stop Light

The auto start/stop system helps to save fuel in your vehicle. The engine will shut down when the brake is activated and you’ve brought the car to a full stop. A green light with the letter A will turn on to signify the system is activated. The engine will seamlessly restart when you press on the accelerator.
