This week, Patrick Connolly, a chartered financial planner at Chase de Vere, gives his tips for someone who is investing for the first time, and outlines how to build a £10,000 portfolio.

Connolly, 49, said the recent market turmoil, amid escalating trade war rhetoric between America and other big economies, could put some people off investing now.

Connolly lives with his son Aidan, 16, and wife Sara, 36, in Bristol. Here he sets out his top fund picks.
