Sutton open for business

Sutton Council and Successful Sutton have been working hard to support local businesses and provide them with as much information and guidance as possible. Businesses over the last few weeks have been doing all they can to be ready to open their doors safely and welcome residents and visitors once more.

Councillor Jayne McCoy, Chair of Sutton’s Housing, Economy & Business Committee, says:

"We have been keen to help our businesses resume trading while also protecting the health of their customers. I am very proud of how our local businesses have stepped up to make sure they are ready to reopen. As shopping locally has become more important than ever, we hope these measures will mean our residents can support our local businesses with confidence."

What shoppers can expect in our high streets

  • Shops have been provided with posters to display, which confirm they’ve undertaken all the government-defined steps to trade safely.
  • Floor stencils will be painted on Sutton High Street and floor markings will be in place in other local high streets over the coming weeks to help you to stay safe and leave the correct space for safe social distancing.
  • As with supermarkets, pharmacies and hardware stores, the number of customers in-store at any one time will be limited. There will be waiting times before you enter, especially at peak periods. Store and town centre marshals will be on hand to direct you and help you to queue safely.
  • Trading hours may also be different than usual, so please check in advance.

How you can keep yourself and others safe when out shopping

  • Consider shopping at quieter times and stay local where possible
  • Plan your journey - walk or cycle where possible. If you do need to use public transport, you must wear a face covering. This will be mandatory and a condition of travel from Monday 15 June.
  • Use a face covering in enclosed spaces or where social distancing is difficult.
  • Wash your hands before leaving home and when you return. Carry hand sanitiser, or use the hand sanitiser provided in-store.
  • While restaurants or bars remain closed, food and drink are available to take away only. Toilet facilities may be more limited than usual. Public toilets will not be open.

Thank you for helping us to keep residents, businesses and the wider community in Sutton safe.
