Halloween is quickly approaching, which means it’s the perfect time to make your house spooky. If you want to get creative this Halloween, you should try making some DIY decorations. Save some money this year and try making these decorations for your house.
These decorations are fun to make with kids, and they make great gifts if you have friends or family members with birthdays this month.
Halloween Candy Door Hanger
Looking for a fun way to hand out candy this year? Try making this candy door hanger.
Supplies:
- chalkboard
- pencil
- craft pumpkin
- hot knife
- 1/2” screw and drill
- 1/2” nail and hammer
- black and white paint and paintbrushes
- candy
Instructions:
- Cut your craft pumpkin in half vertically. On the side you want to use, draw the area where you will cut open the mouth. Make sure this is big enough, since this is where the candy is held.
- Using a hot knife, carve open the mouth. Take this process nice and slow so you don’t burn yourself.
- Trace some eyes on the pumpkin using the pencil. Use the black and white paint to color the eyes in.
- Mount the pumpkin to the chalkboard. Using the drill, get the screw in to the top center of the chalkboard to hang up the pumpkin.
- Remember to secure the bottom of the pumpkin so it can hold the candy. Hammer the nail into the chalkboard so the pumpkin has a foundation. The head of the nail should penetrate the foam of the pumpkin.
- Fill the pumpkin with your choice of treats. As a bonus, write a message on the chalkboard with chalk.
Ghost Lollipop Bouquet
Are lollipops some of your favorite candies to eat around Halloween? Then you will enjoy making this Ghost Lollipop Bouquet.
Supplies:
- wide mouth mason jar
- black spray paint
- 7 lollipops
- white cotton fabric
- twine
- block of floral foam
- black paint or paint pen
- a pair of scissors
Instructions:
- Give your mason jar a few layers of black spray paint. Allow each layer to dry before you apply the next.
- Trim down the block of floral foam with a pair of scissors so it will fit inside the jar.
- Cut 4″ x 4″ squares of the white cotton to drape over the top of each lollipop, tying them on with a piece of twine. Paint the ghost’s eyes with black fabric paint or a paint pen, and stick your mini ghosts into the jar.
Paper Plate Candy Corn Banner
This banner is easy to put together, and is a lot of fun to make with kids.
Supplies:
- Paper plates (not wax-coated ones)
- Orange paint
- Yellow paint
- White paint (optional)
- Paint brush
- Hole punch or tape
- Twine, string, or ribbon
Instructions:
- Lay out the paper plates you’ll be using. Each plate will make about 8 candy corns. You can use all of the same size plate or mix it up with some bigger plates and smaller ones.
- If you’re using white paint, start by painting a white circle on the back side in the center of each plate. Allow the plates to dry a bit and clean the brush.
- Using the orange paint, paint a ring around the white circle and fill it in on each plate. Allow the plates to dry and clean the brush again.
- Finish painting the outside of the plate with the yellow paint, and allow to dry.
- Once plates are dry, cut into quarters. Then cut each quarter in half. Your plate should look like a pie cut into 8 slices.
- Attach the paper candy corns to twine or string with tape or by punching a hole in them.
Mummified Front Door
Want to decorate your front porch for trick-or-treaters? This easy decoration will leave an impression on visitors.
Supplies:
- large roll of white crepe paper
- adhesive putty
- scissors
Instructions:
- Outline all four sides of the door with balls of adhesive putty.
- Cut multiple strips of crepe paper the width of your door and attach them to the putty horizontally in a crisscross pattern to create a mummified effect.
- After attaching the crepe paper the full length of the door, use your fingertips to push on each piece for additional hold. Trim off any excess paper pieces.
