Chris Evans is perhaps best-known for playing Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, the actor revealed how he got into superhero movies and why he took the role of Johnny Storm/Human Torch in 2005's Fantastic Four.

"That was back when the superhero thing was just taking off," Evans told THR on the Awards Chatter podcast. "I had just been dumped and I needed it!" He added that even though he doesn't remember every call for every part he's landed, Fantastic Four stuck out in his mind because he needed a win.

Despite having starred in a couple of movies, Fantastic Four was Evans' first major role and saw him play Johnny Storm again for the 2007 sequel. At this time, the comic book movie boom was only just starting; X-Men had been released in 2000 and Sam Raimi's Spider-Man was credited with kick-starting the industry's ongoing obsession with superhero movies in 2002. Of course, Fantastic Four was only Evans' first step into a much bigger place in the world of comic book films.

Following the success of Iron Man in 2008, the MCU branched out and included Captain America: The First Avenger in its Phase One plan. Since 2011, Evans has appeared in 11 MCU movies and appears to have bowed out with Avengers: Endgame. Evans has repeatedly said he's done playing Steve Rogers and famously handed over his shield to Sam Wilson in Endgame.

While Evans' tenure as Captain America largely overshadows his role as the Human Torch, Fantastic Four was a major turning point for the actor and become a movie that's developed a cult following. Although Story's Fantastic Four movies were met with a mixed reception, Evans' performance as the cocky Johnny Storm was held as a highlight of the series. In fact, Deadpool 2 writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick even pitched the idea of Evans playing the Human Torch in one of the movie's post-credits scenes.

Both Fantastic Four and Fantastic Four: The Rise of the Silver Surfer were moderate box office successes. However, the series stopped after two movies and was eventually rebooted with Josh Trank's Fant4stic in 2015, which saw fellow MCU star Michael B. Jordan take over from Evans to play the Human Torch. As it stands, fans know there are plans for the Fantastic Four to join the MCU, but studio execs are remaining tight-lipped on when and how.
