We all know the saying "dogs are a man's best friend," but in the case of K-9 officers they're more than that. They're partners, and officers' lives often depend on them.

This is why events like the one held Sunday are so important. This weekend was a gathering of the K-9s -- law enforcement dogs from North Las Vegas and the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department showed off their talents in the 28th annual K-9 trials, a national competition for police dogs

These dogs spend their lives chasing down criminals and protecting their designated officer.

"I can't put into words how important it is to have these dogs on the street,” said Sean Malia, LVMPD K-9 handler. “You count on them to save your life, keep you safe during the day, keep the community safe."

Many of the K-9s have been side-by-side with their officers for several years. The bonds both officer and dog form are undeniable. That same bond makes losing or retiring a K-9 especially hard.

Just last week, Henderson police announced that one of their K-9's, named "Rony," died of terminal illness just one month after he retired.

Events like the K-9 Trials aren’t all about which K-9 comes out as top dog. Money from the event actually goes toward making sure these dogs have a retirement plan.

"Once they retire, they have medical needs. This is a way we take care of them,” said Malia.

All of the donations raised during the event-- and the money from any souvenirs purchased -- goes to a non-profit organization that supports these K-9's once they're retired and helps with any medical expenses.
