The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has announced the Golden Globes nominations honoring the best in movies and TV from 2018, and as always their selection is destined to split opinions. There’s nothing out of the ordinary here as far as these prestigious awards things go. As always there were some awful snubs and surprise inclusions, and for all the steps taken towards a more even playing field, there were just as many steps backward.
Let’s start with the big contenders, though. Adam McKay must be thrilled, as his Dick Cheney biopic Vice leads the charge with six nominations. Bradley Cooper will be a happy camper, as his debut feature-length, A Star Is Born, earned five, as did The Favourite and Green Book. The latter is arguably the least exciting movie to be included, as it’s been criticized for the way it deals with racism. I’m still just surprised that a Farrelly brother made a movie that isn’t a gross-out comedy.
On the television front, The Assassination of Gianni Versace leads with four nominations. Elsewhere, Barry, The Kominsky Method, Homecoming, Sharp Objects, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, and A Very English Scandal also performed well, scoring three nominations apiece.
One of the most controversial categories is Best Director – Motion Picture, which is all-male. I’m thrilled to see Spike Lee there, and the buzz for Alfonso Cuaron’s Roma suggests that it’s going to be a scorcher. However, in a year that gave us Lynne Ramsay’s You Were Never Really There and Karyn Kusama‘s Destroyer, to not have any women on the list is a huge misfire on the voters’ part.
But there were some welcome surprises. too. I’m really happy to see some appreciation for this year’s excellent superhero releases. Black Panther is up for three awards (Score, Original Song, and Best Picture – Drama) and rightfully so. Not only is Ryan Coogler’s Marvel epic one of the best movies of 2018, but it’s also one of the most important films ever made. To ignore it would have been a travesty. Another welcome inclusion is Crazy Rich Asians, which was nominated for Best Picture – Musical or Comedy and saw Constance Wu receive a nod for Best Actress in that category.
Of course, much of the conversation will revolve around the movies and TV shows that didn’t make the cut. I suspect movies like Sorry to Bother You, Eighth Grade, and Widows being excluded from their applicable Best Picture categories won’t sit too well with some film fans. And since voters were open to rom-coms this year as evidenced by Crazy Rich Asians receiving nods, I’m disappointed that Love, Simon is nowhere to be found. Furthermore, in a year that’s given us plenty of critic-approved “elevated horror” movies, they couldn’t even find room for Hereditary. A Quiet Place was nominated for Best Score at least…
Still, I’m choosing to focus on the positives. In addition to Black Panther scoring big, Elsie Fisher has been recognized for her outstanding breakout turn in Eighth Grade, and Barry could grab some TV prizes. The nominations were also kind to streaming services this time around, which will no doubt irk some folks and please others.
