2018 Plan to Reduce Gang Violence

Gang violence throughout New York State and specifically in Long Island has become a major problem. The state of New York has proposed a comprehensive plan to stop at-risk youth from being recruited to MS-13, the gang that has been very active in Suffolk County and other parts of New York. The plan aims to increase and expand afterschool programs and opportunities to work and obtain vocational training for children between the ages of 11 and 15. The initiative also includes the following plans:

  • Provide additional support services for “vulnerable young people” in the form of medical and mental health support, family counseling, language training, addiction treatment, and more
  • Create a Community Assistance Team made up of 6 state troopers, 3 investigators, 1 supervisor, and 1 senior investigator that will team up with local law enforcement to monitor gang activity
  • Deployment of a Gang Violence Prevention Unit that is made of 10 New York State troopers
  • Educate teachers and other school faculty regarding how they can recognize warning signs of gang recruitment of students

If you have been arrested on gang-related charges, it is important to contact an experienced criminal defense attorney who can guide you accordingly.
