In November exhaustion typically begins to creep into your life. That feeling that makes you want to hide under your comforter and hit the snooze button in the morning because you’re even more tired than when you went to bed. Is it because your schedule is maxed out? Is it the time change which makes the day come later and rush to leave? Is it the weather getting colder or holiday madness on the horizon? It’s probably a bit of all of these things plus many more that keep you hitting that snooze button again and again… and again!

You most likely can’t change any of these things, but you can change how you face them. This is the time to take extra care of yourself. Before you get the flu. Before you gain the annual festive five pounds. Before you drink too much with family and friends. Making time and taking steps to get ready for winter merriment will go a long way to helping you actually enjoy it.

And while it’s always best to live by good detox strategies so that your body can handle all the extra calories, sometimes it’s fun to try a cool shortcut your friends might be raving about. This year it’s healthy bowls.

So what are healthy bowls?

They are meals, both sweet and savory, which expertly combine ingredients to form completely nourishing and satisfying fuel for your system. Usually you will find breakfast bowls and meal bowls.

What goes into the healthy bowl?

  • Seeds or pulses
  • Fruit or vegetables
  • Protein (like soy, pulses, egg, cheese, yogurt, chicken or beef)

From there you can add a wide variety of ingredients to get the desired taste and nutritional value such as honey, tahini or dressing.

Popular Healthy Bowls

Smoothie bowls (usually contain milk or yogurt)

Macro bowls (contain miso)

Quinoa bowls (contain quinoa)

Acai bowls (contain berries including acai)

Buddha bowls (usually made with tahini sauce)

Just because they are healthy, doesn’t mean you can fill your bowl up two and three times or use a tub-sized bowl. Don’t fall into this common trap!
