Lovers of writing and curious travelers don’t miss the opportunity to know the places that Ernest Hemingway once visited. The novelist lived on the island for more than 20 years. There, he got inspiration for his books, met great friends, went fishing and went out to hunt German submarines.

Hemingway, also known as “Papa”, loved the island and left behind a great contribution to Cuban tourism. La Habana was his social center, but you can follow his route to Santiago de Cuba, Pinar del Río and Cojímar, where he docked on board of his yacht Pilar.

Let’s start the tour at Museo Hemingway. A country house outside La Habana named Finca Vigía. He lived there since 1939 with his third wife, and stayed after their divorced. Some of his books where written in this place where his personal objects are still, including his desk and his enormous library. The furniture, his typewriter and even the graves of his dogs remain in place.

Even his bottles of rum remains at the house. Is not a secret that Hemingway loved to drink. His favorite places where La Bodeguita del Medio where he wrote the phrase “My mojito in La Bodeguita, My daiquiri in El Floridita”, in one of the walls.

Of course, El Floridita is another bar-restaurant on his route. They have a version of the famous Daiquiri named after the novelist, the Hemingway Special or Doble Papa. In fact, when you arrived to El Floridita you´ll see him sitting next to the bar where a bronce statue posses for the visitors with a real Daiquiri on his side.

Whether you like or not his books, visiting these bars is one the things to do in Havana.
The Marina Hemingway is also a “must visit” place. The fishing tournament “Ernest Heminway” is placed there every year. And there’s even a restaurant named “Papa’s”.

Follow Hemingway's steps in Cuba: outside Havana

The route continues outside La Havana. To Cojímar, A fishing village a few minutes away from the capital. At La Terraza he used to enjoy sea food. The old man and the sea was inspired here and by Gregorio, the owner of the restaurant.

When ‘Papa’ won the Nobel Prize he celebrated at Cervecería Hatuey, at the capital, and gave the medal to the Cubans fishermen. It was actually donated to the Virgin of the Charity of the Copper and it stayed at Basilica del Cobre for a few years. Today it’s at Archbishopric of Santiago de Cuba.

Hemingway also visited the beaches in Cuba. Cayo Coco, Cayo Romano and Cayo Mégano, some of the island. He also traveled to Cayo Confites and Cayo Lobo chasing German submarines.
