When I first began planning my trip to Vienna with MEININGER Hotels, I didn’t expect to stumble on as much street art in the city as I did. Vienna is famous for its Austrian Empire, the Hapsburg Dynasty, the opera, and it’s sausages! But actually, there is a wealth of street art in Vienna if you know where to find it!
Street Art Along the Danube Canal
One of the first places I stumbled on street art in Vienna was along the Danube Canal. As I exited the Roßauer Lände and crossed the canal on my way to MEININGER Hotel Vienna Downtown Franz from the airport, I was shocked to see so much art lining the walls of the canal.
I had been expecting my first day in Vienna to be full of regal palaces and towering gothic architecture. The signs you would expect from one of the richest cities in Europe.
Instead, as I crossed Rossauer Brücke, my first sight of the city was splattered with spray paint, graffiti tags and colourful murals!

The Street Art Passage in Vienna
After getting such a good first impression of street art in Vienna, I decided to head to the self-proclaimed street art passage.
It can be found just behind Vienna’s famous Museumsquartier (click here for Google Maps link), blending in well with the contemporary art in the quarter.
The passage contains wonderfully geometric patterns, bright colours, and clever slogans. It definitely isn’t as bright and as abundant with murals as the banks of the Danube canal.
But it’s something fun tucked away in an otherwise classic and clean neighbourhood.
Stray Street Art in Vienna
After stumbling on street art in Vienna as soon as I landed, I kept my eyes peeled for art for the duration of my stay there. And I wasn’t disappointed!
Unfortunately, I can’t remember specifically where I spotted these artworks. Except for the space invader piece! Which you can find on the edge of a building next to Ruprechtskirche (St. Rupert’s Church).
