DestiMED PLUS brings together 9 Mediterranean Regions to develop and promote ecotourism in their Protected Areas  
DestiMED Plus builds on the successes of  MEET and DestiMED projects and aims  to improve levels of integration between regional tourism and conservation policies in Mediterranean protected areas through the creation of ecotourism itineraries which are developed using a collaborative approach, both locally and regionally.

Integrating tourism and conservation

DestiMED PLUS will improve policy coordination between tourism and conservation departments in each project partner region, through the joint creation and promotion of ecotourism itineraries in Mediterranean protected areas. Building on what will be learnt through this process, DestiMED PLUS will then establish a Mediterranean Ecotourism Consortium (MEC) open to all regions at EU level, which will advocate for integrated  ecotourism policies, incorporating conservation, sustainability, and economic perspectives, and for including ecosystem services approaches in tourism planning processes.

Monitoring & training

DestiMED PLUS will develop online tools for measuring and improving the sustainability of ecotourism products and for building capacity among local ecotourism stakeholders. The monitoring platform will enhance the Ecological Footprint calculator developed in DestiMED, incorporating socio-economic, governance and conservation indicators. The training platform will provide content to develop, monitor and promote ecotourism and sustainable coastal tourism development.

The MEET Network

The MEET Network is a non-profit association of Mediterranean protected areas aiming to enhance and promote ecotourism across the Mediterranean basin, born as a spin-off of MEET and DestiMED European projects. The 9 protected areas supported in the DestiMED PLUS project and their respective ecotourism itineraries will be integrated into the MEET network and catalogue for ongoing support and promotion.
