It’s getting ridiculously hot and the traffic is getting a bit less insane, so it must be close to summertime in Fort Lauderdale! We love the beach but there’s a ton of other adventures to be had in this city. To prove it, here’s our bucket list of top to-dos for the summer, have fun! Meet the otters at the Museum of Discovery & ScienceThe new eye-level water exhibit is really fun, and there’s tons of other fish, creatures, and crazy interactive exhibits upstairs. (Definitely hit the O-B House next door for brunch before the museum)
Did you know Birch State Park offers 3-hour Full Moon Mangrove Tours? Get a sneak peek of the park during evening hours in the weaving Mangrove Canal systems. Space is limited to 10 people, so make sure to reserve your spot!
The more ridiculous the better. There was an ode to Nick Cannon’s mad drum skills on the Whiplash board last year.
Head South to Le Tub Saloon for a waterfront sunset and an epic burger (apparently a favorite of Oprah and GQ Magazine). Tables are a bit tricky to grab as this spot has a slow, casual pace, but it’s worth the wait.
Sea Experience offers a range of dive tours out of Port Everglades every day. You can rent gear or bring your own, it’s really easy. It you’re not SCUBA certified, take a snorkel trip instead. Three natural reef structures run parallel to the coastline of Fort Lauderdale and there are a number of great Dive Spots to pick from.
Check out Food In Motion, Flagler Village’s super neat monthly after dark artisan food market. You’ll find food trucks, gourmet greenmarket vendors & picnic blankets under the stars every second Friday of the month at Peter Feldman Park. (This is a pet-friendly event!)
The Florida Community Support organization sponsors a beach clean-up on the second Saturday of each month. Volunteers meet at the Sea Watch Restaurant at 9AM. For more info, please call 954-590-8658. Lauderdale-By-The-Sea also organizes a regular beach clean-up, check out their website for details.
Check the website for the next tour date and access the lighthouse by boat, departing from the Sands pier. Wear flat shoes with rubber soles and closed toes.
The last Saturday of every month is FAT Village Art Walk along 4th Ave and adjacent blocks downtown. Fort Lauderdale is growing in beautiful ways, you can’t miss this monthly local event. (Make sure to stop by Next Door!)
Explore the eclectic Bonnet House Museum & Gardens and you might come face to face with one of the tiny guys that call the historical property home. Built in the 1920s, this home is an artsy gem linked to the pioneering Birch and Bartlett families. You’ve driven past it a million times hidden behind mangroves on A1A, it’s about time you went inside. (The museum organizes a number of neat events as well, like this Orchid Greenhouse Tour)
This free, live, outdoor concert series on Riverwalk in downtown Fort Lauderdale takes place on the first Sunday of every month, 11am- 2pm. Picnic food suggestion: Laspadas subs.
Built in 1901, the riverfront property is adjacent to the Fort Lauderdale Historical Society. Although there is a fee to tour the interior of the house, it’s free to enter and enjoy its grounds.
Outdoor market located on Las Olas Blvd. & SE 4th Ave. in Downtown Fort Lauderdale. Open every Sunday beginning at 9am, offerring a selection of local and organic produce, fresh baked goods, local honey, orchids ($2 parking at #50 Las Olas Place).
The Galt Mile skyline view is pretty neat, definitely worth the $2 pier fee. This spot also has the advantage of getting to smell both dead fish and fresh wonderful Kilwins cones, it’s a win-win.
Or be extra hardcore and take the nighttime tour. Bring bug spray!
It’s beautiful, easy, and fun (even though they kind of make up scandalous stories about waterfront homeowners… ever wonder what they say about you or your neighbors?). Stop #11 is Shooters Waterfront if you’re hungry.
There’s a lot of beautiful birds and bugs to see at Butterfly World. They also offer 2 butterfly gardening workshops during the summer where you can learn how to identify and attract local butterflies in your yard.
