Another day another Marvel event teaser, but this one is DIFFERENT. Instead of teasing the return of a golden oldie event, today’s, revealed at EW, is
a new event titled Inhumans: Attilan Rising, with art by newcomer W. Scott Forbes.
This is significant for many reasons.

For years, the word on the street has been that Marvel hopes to elevate the Inhumans paving the way for a movie property featuring a band of weirdly powered misfits to make up for not having the X-Men in their film universe. (Fox has the rights and shows no signs of slowing down with the franchise.) Attilan is the home of the specially powered Inhumans.

The image, of a booted Medusa stepping on Cyclops does nothing to dissuade this narrative,

EW writes:

This one is pretty different from the other teasers released so far—Attilan Rising is the name of an entirely new story set in current continuity, not a classic one. It alludes to the end of Infinity, last year’s big Avengers crossover. In Infinity, Attilan, the floating throne-city of the Inhumans, was destroyed and crashed to the planet Earth, with the Inhuman king Black Bolt MIA in the fallout. Attilan Rising, then, looks like Black Bolt is poised to rebuild his his fallen kingdom—over the bodies of the current X-Men and the All-New Avengers.

Marvel remains tight-lipped about their end game with all these teasers, but does confirm that they are building to a reveal that promises to make everything clear.

Well played, Marvel!

  1. Marvel seems to be spacing their crossovers out by 3-6 month increments now instead of yearly. Can’t blame them I guess since the current crossover book, whatever its title happens to be, is generally their best selling comic in that month.

As for inhumans replacing mutants in the effective canon…I guess we’ll have to wait and see the origins of Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver in Avengers 2.
