Oceania raises amount of suggested gratuities

Guests planning a trip on Oceania Cruises may want to budget a little more for gratuities. The upscale line is upping the suggested amount for gratuities starting in mid-2015.

The new guidelines are $16 per person per day for staterooms or $23 for guests in top suites, each up a dollar from current policy.

As with most cruise lines, the amount is only suggested and passengers are free to adjust it, but a service charge is automatically added to the cruiser's shipboard account at those amounts unless changed.

By way of comparison, two other premium lines have lower guidelines. Gratuities are $12 for staterooms and $15.50 for suites on Celebrity Cruises and $11.50 for staterooms and $12 for suites on Holland America Line. Several other lines in Oceania's competitive set include gratuities in the fare.
