Increase Your Store Sales With These 3 Easy Add on Items for Summer

Savvy retailers know that selling one item is great, but selling two, three, five or more are even better. Whatever your average unit is per sale, wouldn’t you enjoy selling at least one or two items more every time you made a sale this summer?

Customer service can certainly help increase your store sales, but great items offered during the check out experience can help. Below, here are three tips to consider incorporating into your store checkout experience.

1: Drinks

Now before you think…”drinks, really…” consider this. The big box stores offer drinks for a reason… they sell. Consider how having drinks near your cash wrap may make sense. Water is easy, but think outside the box for beverages that may suit your brand and store experience, as well. Water and one or two other choices is a great start to help increase sales during the summer months. Best part? Mark up!

2. Accessories

Whether you sell fashion, footwear, home decor, children’s goods, crafts or even pet accessories (and countless other categories in between), accessories offer a fantastic opportunity to increase your store sales during check out. From eye glass holders to earrings to pet collars to novelty rings to hair fasteners to compact cases to hold sunglasses, there is always something to add to your cash wrap displays that can catch your customer’s eyes. Consider the price points here, though, before allocating all your open to buy dollars to these items. Keeping prices around $1, $2, $5, $10 or under $20 is a good idea. You know your customer best, as well as your average sale amount, so factor these details into your product price point assortments. Typically speaking, however, customers are more likely to buy something  extra or that they were not planning for when the price doesn’t make them think too much and is easy to just “add onto” the sale.

3. Necessities

Does your inventory depend on batteries? What about a special laundry detergent? Any other care products that may make sense for your inventory? These are great items to consider selling near your cash wrap, as they offer your customers a reminder that they need them. Hand sanitizer, tissues, keychains, flashlights or snacks may also be some items to consider. The key is introducing items that make sense to your core buyer and either compliment your store inventory or cater to your buyer’s needs.

While these items may not be your best sellers, they can introduce new sales into your total sales… ultimately helping you increase store sales. Plus, your customers will love the extra additions they discover while shopping in your store. And finally, don’t forget to train your staff – and yourself – to ask your customers if they need “this” or “that” during the check out process, helping you to push these items and increase sales all at the same time.
