Mold Concerns Force Partial Closure of Saint Lucia School

Late last month, the St. Lucia News Online published a report that a mold and termite infestation at Corinth Secondary School has resulted in a section of the school being closed.  According to the article, the decision was made after numerous complaints from students and faculty about various health concerns.
 
Molds produce allergens, irritants, and in some cases, toxic substances known as mycotoxins.  The article specifically reports issues related to skin irritations experienced by the building’s occupants. These types of allergic reactions to mold are quite common and can be immediate or delayed.  For students and teachers who spend long hours in a classroom with mold contamination issues, it can cause non-sensitive individuals to become sensitive to mold.  Repeated exposures also have the potential to increase sensitivity.  Many children also suffer from asthma and exposure to mold in a known asthma trigger.
