Six Outdoor Markets to Visit Before It Gets Too Hot

Spend the day outside while you still can.

First cupcake bakeries, then food trucks. While Houston might embrace trends a little later than, say, our hippie cousin to the west, when we do, we do it right. Enter the next big thing to up the Bayou City’s cool factor: al fresco markets overflowing with handmade and local goods. Save the mall for August and pick up some treasures or ephemera at ephemeral venues like these. 

1. First Saturday Arts Market

Where: The Heights (548 W. 19th St.)
When: May 3, and the first Saturday of each month
Take Home: Post-impressionist-style paintings of local landmarks from artist Arthur Deatly and modern minimalist metal jewelry from Maggie’s Meltdown

2. Craftacular Second

Saturdays at Hello Lucky
Where: The Heights (1025 Studewood St.)
When: May 10 (unless it’s “too dang hot”), and every second Saturday each month
Take Home: Mid-century modern coffee tables with graphic tops from Squatter

3. Discovery Flea

Where: Downtown (Discovery Green, 1500 McKinney St.)
When: May 17, and the third Saturday of each month
Take Home: Vintage trinkets, kitschy collectibles, and previously loved music, records, and books from Friends of the Houston Public Library

4. The Market at Mid-Main

Where: Midtown (Corner of Main St. and Winbern St.)
When: May 4, and every first Sunday in the spring and fall
Take Home: Leather dog collars, clever cards, and mugs from The Barking Bunny

5. Watershed Market

Where: EaDo (2322 Polk St.)
When: May 10 and 11, with three more planned markets in 2014
Take Home: Edible gardens-in-a-box and gardening supplies from Patiovore

6. Pop Up in the Park

Where: Bellaire (Evelyn’s Park Conservancy, 4400 Bellaire Blvd.)
When: May 24, and the fourth Saturday of each month
Take Home: Children’s clothing from Cuteheads and beaded accessories from Goldenstrand Jewelry
