BIG BEAR LAKE >> Mountain resorts are kicking off their spring and summertime activities early following a dismal winter.

Snow Summit Mountain Resort opened its mountain bike park Friday, making it the first mountain resort bike park to open in the U.S. this season, according to resort officials.

“We’ve done a full assessment of the mountain to ensure our trails are ready to ride,” Big Bear Mountain Resorts vice president of marketing Chris Riddle said. “We’re thrilled to give mountain bikers the opportunity to enjoy our bike trails in April, which is the earliest we’ve ever offered this.”

Snow Summit is the only mountain bike park in Southern California that uses its snow lifts to get riders to the top, according to officials. But it’s not only mountain biking that’s taking place at the resort.

“We’ve got hiking trails for all levels of experience as well as a fantastic mountain top restaurant,” Snow Summit manager Wade Reeser said. “But if you’re looking for trails to rip-it-up on we have just what you’re looking for.”

Extreme banking turns, jumps and wooden bridges for all skill levels have been constructed on three separate trails for the modest to extreme riders, Reeser added.

“Opening day we had 30 vendors selling their products and a DJ on site for entertainment,” he said. “It’s sure to be a great time in the outdoors.”

The resort offers mountain bike rentals, but local businesses such as Chains Required Bike Shop at 41869 Big Bear Blvd. are also prepared for the early biking season.

“We offer bicycle rentals, repair services and cycling apparel and accessories for all biking needs here in Big Bear,” business owner Jack Bailey said. “There’s so many different types of trails up here in the mountains. From extreme downhill to cruising around the lake. There’s something for everyone up here.”

Snow Summit also offers a ride on the mile-long Scenic Sky Chair that takes sightseers and hikers to the top of Snow Summit, which has an elevation of 8,200 feet.

It offers panoramic views and brings nature up close, including the option to hike back down rather than taking the sky chair.

Visitors have already started making the trek from the flatlands up to the mountain to take advantage of the great Southern California weather.

“I took the day off to come up to Big Bear to take advantage of this weather,” Rialto resident Carlos Ramos said Wednesday. “It’s a perfect day to get in a ride, hit some shops and eat great food.”
