The intern relationship is supposed to get young professionals experience with a business - unfortunately most intern experiences do not expose them to business practices only architectural/design practices - if you want a successful business of the type YOU want to have (not someone else) it is important to keep your eyes and ears open. I teach my interns about business as the issues come up but most principles do not - too busy with production and why train competition?

A HUGE part about practicing is legal issues and I have not found CE regarding that - attorneys don't want you to know these things and frankly they are very hard to know as it is a little, highly specialized club designed to keep you in the dark, but you must learn about legal issues if you are to maintain your sanity and peace of mind. You can do a lot of damage to your self if you do not know what you are doing - IP attorneys are some of the most expensive - $350/hr.

What does "published" mean relative to a copyright application for instance? What benefits do registering a design with the copyright office get you? What is a copyright for and what does it do for you as a design professional? Thinking you know these answers and actually knowing them are two different things.

We have a legal system not a justice system - this is a very important distinction - if you don't know the law you are at a distinct disadvantage. If you do not protect your business assets (iconic designs) people can just take them from you.

There are many wolves in sheep's clothing out there.

Sarah - if you are going to advertise surreptitiously could you proofread it so it reads well - poor ad copy is not a good reflection on your business. It reads like you were in too big a hurry to do a good job - now I know all I need to about your company.

Sometimes starting a business you have to prime the pump - any extra time you have should be spent designing the kind of projects you want to do even though they are academic. I'm working on a design currently that would be perfect for a business. Will they go for it? Don't know, but it will still look good in my portfolio regardless and show people design potential. They are good people and appreciate good design - seeing something you didn't know you needed is often the start of a relationship.

Here is the rendering so far - it is in process.
