If you had to guess, off the top of your head, which New Jersey city paid women the highest salaries, it probably wouldn’t be Trenton. It certainly wasn’t for me.But the folks at NerdWallet, a financial literacy site, sifted through U.S. Census data from 2012 and found that Trenton and neighboring Ewing Township came in at No. 5 on the list of the top 10 best-paying cities for women.

The median salary for women in that area is $50,400 per year, which is about 74 percent of what men make there.

The New York-Northern New Jersey-Long Island area also made it on the list, but three spots down from Trenton, at No. 8. The median salary for women there is $47,600 per year, roughly 84 percent of what men make in the area.

And remember: That area includes New York City.

So what’s so special about Trenton?

The post on Forbes that outlines the data analysis doesn’t address that question directly, but it’s an interesting finding. And good news for the women of Trenton is good news for the state as a whole, regardless of the cause.
