GREENWICH —Last week Stewartsville Middle School closed six classrooms after a teacher discovered mold in one classroom and reported it to school officials, Superintendent Maria Eppolite said today.

Following their discovery, the Greenwich Township School District then hired R K Occupational & Environmental Analysis of Phillipsburg to assess the levels in the affected rooms on Tuesday, Sept. 25, Eppolite said.

“They reported that there were higher than acceptable levels, so we then hired a company to come in and clean the rooms,” she said.

Cleanup began on Wednesday and concluded Friday, Eppolite said. The six classrooms are still closed off, pending the results of a second test from the mold assessors conducted on Monday, Sept. 30.

Letters and emails were sent to faculty, staff and parents discussing the mold discovery and remediation, but copies of the correspondences were not immediately available.

Eppolite said she does not yet have an official report of surface and air quality tests from R K Occupational & Environmental Analysis, and school officials are still not aware of the cause of the mold although they are looking into potential problems with their HVAC system.

“The children have adapted quite well, and the staff has been fully accommodating,” Eppolite said, adding “instruction has not been compromised” by the closed classrooms.
