For most people in the United States, the only options for internet service providers are massive cable companies, like Comcast and Verizon. These companies want the internet to look a lot more like cable TV, making traffic throttling, website blocking, and extra internet fees the new norm. The only thing stopping them is the current Net Neutrality rule, which is why the cable lobby is trying so hard to kill it by pressuring the U.S. Federal Communication Commission (FCC).
The current Net Neutrality protections were put in place by the FCC after millions of internet users like you submitted comments explaining how important Net Neutrality is to our daily lives. But now, the new FCC Chairman Ajit Pai — a former Verizon lawyer — wants to repeal those rules, killing Net Neutrality and ending an era of unprecedented openness online.

Cable companies and their supporters have deployed a range of underhanded tactics, including submitting what appear to be fake anti-Net Neutrality comments in activists’ names to the FCC docket. But today, websites, companies, internet users, and online communities are coming together to sound the alarm about the FCC’s attack on Net Neutrality.
Nearly everyone who understands and depends on the internet supports Net Neutrality, whether they’re startup founders, activists, gamers, politicians, investors, comedians, YouTube stars, or typical internet users who just want their internet to work as advertised.
Without Net Neutrality, cable companies — who are famous for high prices and poor service — will be able to charge for faster access, and bully any site into paying millions to escape the “slow lane.” This would amount to a tax on every sector of the economy that depends on the internet, and it would extinguish the startups and independent voices who can’t afford to pay.
