Powering Up Research

Welcome back to another instalment of the SES newsletter. We're halfway through 2017 and in the midst of both summer holidays and event preparation. Read on for details of our upcoming conferences, as well as featured research and equipment from around the consortium.

This month we sat down with Prof. Simon Coles from the UK National Crystallography Service (The University of Southampton) to discover the cutting edge serves provided to researchers across the country. The wide-ranging roster of NCS users includes every member of the SES consortium (e.g. QMUL's School of Biological and Chemical Sciences) and partners such as Diamond Light Source. We also take a look at some of Imperial College London's shared facilities, the Cross Faculty NMR Centre and the Facility for Imaging by Light Microscopy.

We look forward to seeing you in September or November for our Powering Up Research Series.

The MMM Hub: Accelerating Materials and Molecular Modelling

Join us at UCL on September 14th as we launch a the new Materials and Molecular Modelling Hub. To register, please visit our website. Places are limited.

Hosted at UCL this September 14, The MMM Hub: Accelerating Materials and Molecular Modelling is just part I in Powering Up Research.

A rapidly expanding field, Materials and Molecular Modelling Science lies at the heart of almost every modern technology, with an enormous impact on the UK economy.  A launching platform for the MMM Hub, this distinct event will bring together researchers, academics, and industry members from across the UK, as well leaders from the international materials community, to discuss the varied research taking place across the new Hub and further afield.

With an aim to foster collaborative interdisciplinary research and the cross fertilisation of ideas, the event will offer researchers an opportunity to reach out beyond their immediate local networks and provide the prospect to collaborate with other scientists, academics, support staff in High Performance Computing (HPC), and private industry.  Speakers include:

  • Prof. Mark Miodownick (UCL)
  • Massimo Noro (Unilever)
  • Prof. Chris Pickard (The University of Cambridge)
  • Dr. Francesca Baletto (King's College London)
  • Dr. Rachel Crespo-Otero (Queen Mary University of London)
  • Prof. Daniele Dini (Imperial College London)

We welcome guests from SES and other institutions/organisations.
