Why New York?

The city holds a very special place in my heart because of Broadway. When I was growing up in the Isle of Man, with ambitions of being a performer, I really wanted to go to see a Broadway show. I visited first with my family when I was about 10, and have been back for several trips. I once went in March, when the snow was deep on the ground and the streets were relatively deserted.

I love the fact that there is so much support for theatre and musical theatre. It is a fiery city, with an attitude and such an electric buzz about it. The cliché of it never sleeping is very true. There is so much to see and do culturally, I can’t imagine getting tired of it. This month I’ll be performing at Feinstein’s/54 Below, where so many amazing people have played, which is a massive honour.

Anything special I should pack?

Pack for all types of weather. You never know if it will be changeable. You definitely need your thermals for a winter trip to the city – and a smart outfit for attending a Broadway show.

What do you miss most when away?

The food. I am vegetarian, and the city really caters well for diverse tastes and diets. One of my favourite eateries is Beechers Cheese Shop, which does the most incredible toasties. I tried my first magnolia cupcake in New York, too.

First thing you do when you arrive?

Probably see friends then dash off to see a show. I like to walk around Central Park and take in the vibe, have a picnic if the weather is good and people-watch.

Where’s the best place to stay?

The Edition Hotel (as reviewed by the Telegraph here) is really beautiful, modern and chic. When I was visiting New York in 2012 to promote Les Misérables, I stayed at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel, which was also lovely.

Where do you meet friends for a drink?

Bathtub Gin. It is like a speakeasy behind this little coffee shop, and has a Bugsy Malone-type atmosphere. Really fun.

Where is the best place for lunch?

Alice’s Tea Cup does very good food and an excellent afternoon tea, with delicious scones. Chop’t has design-your-own salads, and Hale and Hearty Soups is a good place to pick up a healthy alternative for lunch.

And for dinner?

Joe’s Pizza is very good for traditional New York pizzas.

Where do you take a first-time visitor?

A sightseeing trip to see the Empire State Building, [the former] Ground Zero [site], and the Statue of Liberty is a must. I’d also recommend seeing a show on Broadway. When my parents were over recently they watched Mary Poppins and I’ve seen Hamilton twice. I would love to go and do a Sex and the City bus tour, and go to see the Hamptons too, which I’ve heard very good things about.

Central Park and the High Line are good places for taking long walks and getting some fresh air. Taking a cab to listen to the banter from the taxi drivers is an essential part of the New York experience, of course. I remember on one of my first trips being blown away by how knowledgeable my cab driver was about shows on Broadway past and present.

What should I avoid?

Trying to do too much when you first get there. It can be an overwhelming place, as it is so fast and busy, so I’d recommend taking your time, not putting yourself under pressure and enjoying the city at your own pace.

What should I bring home?

A foam crown from the Statue of Liberty or an “I love New York” mug for family and friends.

Public transport or taxi?

I try to walk and get taxis. I haven’t used the buses but the subway is fine.

Handbag or money belt?

Like most major cities, you have to be cautious, but so far I have found it to be quite a safe place. There are always lots of people around in the central theatre area.

Anywhere that isn’t your kind of town?

Nowhere springs to mind really. I love LA although I find it hard that everything is so far apart. But as long as wherever you visit, you have good company; a new place is always going to be interesting.
