COLUMBIA, SC (WACH) - On this week's edition of OnPoint on WACH Fox, we look at the importance of getting girls interested in STEM.

When it comes to careers in science, technology, engineering or mathematics there's a big difference in the number of men in those ?elds and the number of women.

In South Carolina, men outnumber women in those ?elds 5 to 1. In an effort to close the gap, a host of organizations are putting a lot more emphasis on girls in K-12, hoping to increase interest in core subjects that can lead to STEM careers.

This week on OnPoint on WACH Fox we look at girls and STEM and talk about OnPoint's upcoming leadership program for girls that has a strong STEM component.

We want to teach them to lead, but, we're also on a mission to get more of them interested in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

We will also talk about the tremendous amount of children in this state who are growing up with a father figure in the house. Almost 40 percent of South Carolina children are being raised in a situation like that.

It impacts every member of the family and community, especially fathers, men, and boys. We'll let you know about an upcoming conference that looks to equip fathers with resources that will strengthen their fathering, work, relationships, and ?nancial management skills so they can teach boys valuable life skills.
