Amazon's Strategy: Roti, Kapada Aur makan

Amazon's Strategy: Roti, Kapada Aur makan

In order to survive every human being's physiological needs have to be met - Air, Water, Food, Shelter and clothing. While I used the title "Roti Kapda Aur Makaan"  a 1974 Bollywood Hindi-language film, Maslow's Hierarchy of needs may be a more apt quote here "Physiological needs are the physical requirements for human survival. If these requirements are not met, the human body cannot function properly and will ultimately fail. Physiological needs are thought to be the most important; they should be met first.

Air, water, and food are metabolic requirements for survival in all animals, including humans. Clothing and shelter provide necessary protection from the elements."

With the acquisition of Whole Foods, Amazon fulfills the need for food. Speculation is that more food companies or a clothing brand is on the cards.

What about shelter? What would Amazon do? Amazon has a weakness that your phone is controlled by Google and Apple and they only get to interact with you when use the app. Amazon's Fire phone did not resonate and now amazon does not have the insights into everything you do on your phone which has for many people become the device that connects them to the net most.

Amazon's strategy is now to own the voice space with Amazon Echo and the new Amazon Echo Show.

In my opinion Amazon's strategy should be two fold.

a) Shelter: Amazon invests in real estate with Amazon apartments/Homes where everything is seamless-food, shelter and clothing. You come home and the Amazon dinner box from Whole Foods is outside your door. You change into Amazon lounge wear, watch the Amazon bought TV and sit and sleep on Amazon furniture.

b) Internet: this is yet another gap for Amazon. if it does not own the connectivity, any competitor can put roadblocks in Amazon's path. They need to own the connectivity. Whether they do it with acquisition or with partners building their own network, Amazon internet cannot be far off. It is crucial to them as their whole business depends on the internet.

What do you think? Real estate or Internet. Where will Amazon invest next? You heard it from here first, - Real Estate.

Shashi lovely article. I think Digital Internet space is where they would go since they currently mostly own the real estate of their properties and warehouses.
