Frankie Dettori in no rush as he bids to be 100 per cent at Goodwood: 'I'm going to be cherry-picking rides'

  • Frankie Dettori missed Royal Ascot after sustaining a left shoulder injury
  • The Italian is working his way back to full fitness before Glorious Goodwood
  • He admits he returned prematurely to win the  Irish Oaks on talented filly Enable
  • Dettori is unlikely to race ride again until Newbury or Newmarket on Saturday

Frankie Dettori says he will take rides sparingly in the next fortnight as he bids to get back to 100 per cent fitness for Glorious Goodwood.

The Italian was forced to miss Royal Ascot after sustaining a fracture in his left shoulder at Yarmouth. The injury cost him five winners at the royal meeting, including Big Orange in the Ascot Gold Cup, and kept him out for five weeks.

Dettori returned to action with two rides at Newmarket last Thursday and won Saturday's Irish Oaks on the talented John Gosden-trained Enable.

But Dettori admitted the prospect of a Classic ride on such an outstanding filly had pushed him into returning earlier than was comfortable. He is unlikely to race ride again until Newbury or Newmarket on Saturday.

He said: 'I am going to be cherry-picking my rides. I am not ready to ride five or six races in a day so I will slowly rebuild it.

'I will be riding out and having physio to re-strengthen my shoulder and comeback at the weekend.

'Enable was my excuse to come back, I rushed back to ride her. Realistically I am back about a week too early but all I had to do was steer her.

'In the back of my mind I knew she could win but even I was surprised how easily she did it.'

Dettori believes Enable must be considered a serious contender for the Arc in October and hinted her more likely next run is next month's Yorkshire Oaks rather than the King George at Ascot on Saturday week.

At Glorious Goodwood, which starts on August 1, Dettori will be re-united with Big Orange as Michael Bell's gelding tries to become the first horse to win the Goodwood Cup for three consecutive seasons.

But a re-match in a race now scheduled for the opening day of the meeting with Aidan O'Brien's Ascot Gold Cup runner-up Order of St George is off. He is being rested for a return in September's Irish Leger.

O'Brien will be represented by US Army Ranger, who was third in the Queen Alexandra Stakes at Royal Ascot.
