Trailer for Amazon’s The Tick Reboot Is a Whole Lot of Fun

It’s been nearly a year since Amazon released the test pilot of its reboot of The Tick, which was subsequently picked up for a full season order. Originally, a lot of fans were wary of a remake, as it has awfully big shoes to fill, looking back to the beloved animated series to the live-action Patrick Warburton reboot to the original comic. But if you watched the Amazon pilot last year, I’m going to guess you’re onboard.

The new series stars Peter Serafinowicz as the titular hero. You know Serafinowicz from Guardians of the Galaxy and Shaun of the Dead, or maybe opposite Melissa McCarthy in Spy or one of my favorites, as Lord Covington from Parks and Recreation.

His casting here is brilliant and he positively nails the necessary booming Tick voice.

But the pilot didn’t center on him so much as it did on Griffith Newman’s Arthur. While the absurd humor fans have come to expect is still entirely prevalent in this reboot, there’s also a surprising emotional heft. The show dives heavily and earnestly into Arthur’s past trauma and mental health issues. That’s not very apparent in that trailer up there, but hopefully, the pilot’s dark overtones have been left intact. Amazon sometimes makes big changes between their pilot season and full series premiere, but what they presented last year was pitch-perfect. So here’s hoping they left it as-is, darkness and all.

We’ll find out when the series airs on August 25th.
