Dundee mill sets the scene for planned adventure play park
Planning in principle is being sought for conversion of Dundee’s former Dens Road Market to form an indoor adventure play centre.

Occupying a collection of redundant mill buildings Arktx have drawn up plans for its conversion to house a bowling alley, trampoline park, climbing frames, crazy golf course, dodgems and café to offer a broad mix of family friendly entertainment.

The £1.5m project will serve an inner-city area with significant social and economic deprivation by introducing a suite of new facilities to the area for the first time.

In a statement Arktx wrote: “This development provides an opportunity to bring an historic and culturally significant building back into sustainable use to the benefit of the local community and wider city. There is currently no similar facility located within the city or wider area.”

As part of this work an existing chimney will be reduced in height and repointed with a new front elevation created to Dens Road formed from brick, rainscreen cladding and feature glazed projections.

What this amounts to is the destruction of a 'culturally significant building' by means of clashing materials and awkward massing. More so, the 19th century industrial-era townscape the current building supports would be seriously damaged. The chimney itself is a landmark, yet the applicant seeks to reduce its height (there may be safety issues but these could probably be resolved). Very poor.

...see someone has already smashed the windaes; at least it's in the planning drawings, so it's one thing that will become reality.
