There’s a new disc golf course in town.

Nine Boy Scouts came together to build a new 18-hole course at the Bloomington Hills North Park. It’s the third course to be built in St. George, but is the only one that is packed with some one-of-a-kind features to provide players with a professional feel.

“It's a high-quality course,” said Scoutmaster T.J. Dick. “There’s really no other course like it in St. George. They boys raised a lot of money and put a bunch of time into it. The course reflects it, and we are really proud of the boys and for what they were able to accomplish.”

With pristine signage and concrete tee pads, more than $4,500 was raised to construct the course. Each boy was in charge of building and designing one of the nine holes. It’s estimated that around 50 hours of planning, preparation and clean-up went into completing each hole.

“There are nine holes, but each hole has a movable basket with two pin locations which allows for an 18-hole tournament to take place,” Dick added.

To celebrate, a grand opening will take place this Saturday at the park with the money raised from the tournament benefiting the Boy Scouts of America. The tournament starts at 10 a.m., with registration beginning at 8 a.m. Players can also contact Andrew at 435-319-5286, or email him at solidchainsdg@gmail.com to pre-register.

The tournament is designed for all ages and abilities with various sponsors providing free t-shirts, discs, and lunch by Jimmy John's to youth 9-17. Adults who would like to participate can sign up for $15 dollars and will also receive a T-shirt, disc, and lunch.

Workers put the finish touches on one of the concrete tee pads at the Bloomington Hills North Park.

“We are excited to show it (the course) off,” said Easton Nisson. “We are glad that everyone will be able to use it and can come and have fun.”

With $500 needed to help pay for material and the design of each hole, each of the soon-to-be Eagle Scouts came up with a bunch of different fundraising efforts.
From yard sales to car washes and from bake sales to even a GoFundMe page, the boys did it all. Dylan Esplin, even earned all his money by himself, by working various jobs to pay for the costs.

The course was built by Trevor Croft, Drake Topham, Adam Gao, Ethan Rapoza, Ezra Dick, Dylan Esplin, Maverick Roberts, Easton Nisson and Nick Moore.

Whitwer,Jensen and Whittington win Super Saturday matches

Braving triple digit temperatures, St. George area tennis players took to the courts this past weekend as part of the Super Saturday tennis tournament at Desert Hills High School.

Mike Whitwer held off Rick Whittington for the singles titles while Joe Jensen and Jason Whittington defeated Kelly Perry and Matt Sharrer in the doubles finale.

The singles semifinals were perhaps the most challenging as Whitwer fought off a young and rising junior star, Averie Beck, (3-2, 2-3, 3-2) while Whittington took out former Snow Canyon tennis standout, Landin Saipale (3-0, 2-3, 3-1). Beck, who will be going into 8th grade, is the sister of Desert Hills state runner-up Allie Beck.

In Tier 2 singles, Desert Hills junior Jake Hardy defeated another young phenom, Jaden Whitwer. Whitwer will be going into sixth grade next year.

The tournament featured 17 junior players competing against 15 adults. Super Saturday’s unique and fun format focuses on development for athletes of all ages in a tournament that brings the community and visiting players together.

Super Saturday is sponsored by Vacation Resort Solutions and Synergy Books Publishing. Besides being a fun event, the tournament also raises funds to upgrade the Desert Hills tennis courts.

Next Saturday's event will start at 8 a.m. The cost is $5 per player. The winner of the four-week Grand Prix will receive a top-of-the-line tennis racquet. For any questions, call 435-680-3250.
