The road allows residents of an apartment complex in Chongqing to navigate its hilly geography in the comfort of their own cars, according the site’s security staff

The southwestern Chinese city of Chongqing is fast building a reputation for unusual architecture, a product, some say, of its hilly geography.

The latest to catch the attention of netizens is a road on top of a five-storey building, the Beijing Youth Daily reported.

Security guards at the residential complex said that since the site was hilly, residents needed to drive up from street level or take a lift to get to their homes, and the road, which is on the lowest building and goes around the whole complex, was the main method for moving around.

The building underneath the road houses the complex’s four-storey car park and has shops on the ground floor.

Among the other unusual constructions in Chongqing that have caught the eye is a residential building with a light railway running through it, which has become a hot tourism spot, and a sprawling road interchange with 15 ramps going in eight different directions that has been dubbed the nation’s most complex junction.

In March two 23-metre-long parallel bridges were built connecting the 21st floors of two high-rise buildings.
